The greenhouse is an open classroom with over 1000 native trees (sota caballo, guarumo, tucuico, Santa María, guachipelin, chirraca, guapinol, espavel, roble sabana, candelillo, bijarro, guayabo y targua). We use it for environmental education, experiential learning, tree planting, preparation of organic substrate, and seed collection with youth and their families to understand the importance of protecting the environment. To achieve the economic sustainability of this project, we partnered with companies, cooperatives, and local farmers who buy and exchange trees and organic substrates.
In our small property of 200 square meters located in Corralar de Mora, we have more than 70 tree and plant species (Guachipelin, Laurel, Güitite, Ginger, Avocado, etc). In the Botanical Garden, the youth and their families have the opportunity to meet them, learn their common and scientific names, see them grow, and indulge the nature. This place shows a small part of the diversity of trees and plants at the local, regional, national, and international levels.
Intending to protect the environment, we dream of buying land to guarantee the protection of forests, springs, and rivers by reforesting the area and implementing the skills that youth and their families have learned. We plan to buy a 15,000 square-meter plot of land for a total of $65,000 in the Guarumalito community in the Chires district located in Puriscal. There are plenty of opportunities, but we need resources. With this project, we want to contribute to implementing the Sustainable Development Goals through actions that improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of our region.
This project encompasses consulting services tailored for companies and organizations keen on undertaking restoration projects or seeking guidance to enhance project efficiency. We integrate these projects with educational activities for children and their families, fostering experiential learning. Our overarching objective is to secure funding for further initiatives, with education and the planting of native trees as integral components of our work.
For Visionarios de Paz, volunteering is an opportunity to work on projects and exchange experiences that benefit both the volunteers and the organization. Volunteers have collaborated with us by organizing activities, watering trees, collecting solid waste, planning social networks, creating a curriculum, searching for resources, and maintaining the Botanical Garden and the Greenhouse. Volunteer contributions can be made in person or virtually.
La Magia del Agua, or 'The Magic of the Water,' is located in the Nacientes Palmichal ecolodge. We created this project with the visit of the members of Visionarios de Paz in a doing-learning workshop led by Rebeca. The youth drew what the place looked like in order to have a unique interaction with water. The name 'The Magic of the Water' comes from the youth. This space, an outcome of Visionarios de Paz’s work, is available to us and the general public, thereby impacting the community. Our primary objective with this space is to foster continuous learning through workshops and strengthen our ties with other institutions. We believe that by educating children about the importance of water conservation and encouraging collaboration with other organizations and communities, we can make a significant difference.
Implement an experiential environmental education to increase the environmental awareness among youth and their families with nature, oriented around the preservation of biodiversity and water resources.
